He did the postdoctoral research in the University of York in 1992-1993. He worked as a research fellow in the University of Sheffield in 1994. During 1996-2000, he was a senior engineer in GEC-Alsthom and ALSTOM, and then a principal engineer and a project leader in ABB ALSTOM Power. He was a senior lecturer in the University of Nottingham in 2000-2003, a Hundred-Talent Program visiting professor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2001-2005, and a Changjiang Scholar visiting professor of Harbin Institute of Technology in 2008-2010. He has been a professor in the University of Glamorgan since 2004. He has held a Qianren visiting professorship at Harbin Institute of Technology.

Prof Liu's research interests include networked control systems, multi-objective optimal control, nonlinear identification and control, and industrial advanced control applications. He is an author of 7 books, 2 edited books, over 100 journal papers and numerous conference papers. He was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship in 1992. He received the best paper prize for applications at the UKACC International Conference on Control in 1998, the outstanding overseas scholarship award from the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2005, GuanZhaoZhi best paper prize at the 26th Chinese Control Conference in 2007, the best paper prize at the 13th International Conference on Automation and Computing in 2007, and the second prize of Chinese National Science and Technology Awards in 2008.

Prof. Liu was the general chair of the 2007 IEEE International Conference on Networking, Sensing and Control, the 2011 International Conference on Intelligent Control and Information Processing, and the 2012 UKACC International Conference on Control. He is a Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of IET. He has served as an Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Automation and Computing, and as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems.

Zhang Youmin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and also with the Concordia Institute of Aerospace Design and Innovation (CIADI) & Concordia Institute for Water, Energy and Sustainable Systems (CIWESS) at Concordia University, Canada. Prof. Zhang received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in 1983, 1986, and 1995 respectively from the Department of Automatic Control, Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU), Xi'an, China. He was early promoted as an Associate Professor in 1992 while he worked at NPU. Before joining in Concordia University in Dec. 2006, he held several teaching and research positions previously in NPU, University of New Orleans, Louisiana State University, State University of New York at Binghamton, The University of Western Ontario, and Aalborg University, respectively.

His main research interests and experience are in the areas of condition monitoring, fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant (flight) control systems; cooperative guidance, navigation and control of unmanned aerial/space/ground/surface/underwater vehicles with different civilian applications; dynamic systems modeling, estimation, identification and control; and advanced signal processing techniques for diagnosis, prognosis and health management of safety-critical systems and components, renewable energy generation and distribution systems, water distribution systems, and manufacturing processes. He has published 4 books with co-authors (including a book on "Active Fault Tolerant Control Systems: Stochastic Analysis and Synthesis" (2003) and a book on "Fault Diagnosis and Fault Accommodation for Control Systems" (2009)), over 250 referred journal and conference papers. His comprehensive review paper published at Annual Reviews in Control on "Bibliographical Review on Reconfigurable Fault-tolerant Control Systems" has gained significant impact in the field worldwide. The paper has been ranked No. 1 in the "Most Cited Articles" published since 2007 and the highest citation ever in the journal after the paper published in Dec. 2008. Prof. Zhang has been invited to give international conference plenary talks, research seminars, and tutorials/workshops worldwide for more than 40 times since 2005. He is a senior member of AIAA, a senior member of IEEE, a member of the IFAC Technical Committee (TC) on Fault Detection, Supervision and Safety for Technical Processes, a member of the AIAA Infotech@Aerospace Program Committee (PC) on Unmanned Systems, a member of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society TC on Aerial Robotics and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, and a member of the ASME/IEEE TC on Mechatronics and Embedded Systems and Applications. He is an Editorial Board Member and/or (Associate) Editor of several international journals (including two new journals of Unmanned Systems and International Journal of Intelligent Unmanned Systems) and IPC member of many international conferences.
